Not all Anime is for kids, and calling everything "cartoons" strips the unique medium of its cultural context. It also lessens the value of other shows by placing them in a genre that made up to downplay their worthiness. You wouldn't call The Dark Knight a movie just because it's in film (that'd be like calling anime cartoons), so don't make the same mistake with your favorite series.
